Obituary of Norman S Martin
Norman S. “Bud” Martin of Woburn passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on March 16, 2020 at the age of 94.
Bud was born on August 11, 1925 in Cambridge to David and Ethel (Stevens) Martin. He was the second oldest of six children. In October of 1943 at 18 years old, Bud enlisted in the United States Army and was called to serve on the front in Europe in the late summer of 1944, mere weeks after turning 19. Bud bravely fought with the 26th Yankee Division as a Private First Class at the Battle of the Bulge under General Patton.
After the war, Bud attended the University of Bridgeport in Bridgeport, CT. It was there he met his wife, Nancy Wilcox. They were married on September 13, 1952 and spent 67 years together. Bud and Nancy had three children, Paul, William, and Elizabeth.
Bud worked at Mystic Transformer in Winchester, MA. He then worked as an electrical inspector and supervisor at GenRad in Concord, MA. He retired in 1990 at 65 years old.
At 75 years old, Bud survived a stroke. This didn’t stop him from enjoying his annual trip to Four Winds in Long Boat Key, FL, and spending time with the many friends he had there.
Bud was also an avid Boston sports fan. His favorite team was the Red Sox and he never missed watching a game. When the Red Sox season was over, Bud would watch any sport he could, especially the UConn Women’s Basketball team. No game was too small for Bud and he was the number 1 fan at his grandchildren’s games.
Each summer, Bud enjoyed vacationing with his family at their cottage in Alton Bay, NH. The family would take their motorboat to the beaches that lined the pond their house overlooked and out to Blueberry Island in the middle of the pond, where he would pick fresh blueberries with his family for pancakes. His grandchildren fondly remember Bud pushing them in the hammock and singing “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad.” His patience and love for his grandchildren was unmatched.
Bud also loved playing tennis with his wife as often as he could. They could often be found on the court together, playing doubles matches with a large group of friends.
Bud is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Martin of Woburn; his children, Paul and Brenda of Woburn, William and Marie of Billerica, and Elizabeth of Woburn; his grandchildren, David, Justin and his wife Colleen, Eric, Jillian, Laurel and Jared; his three great-grandchildren, Nora, Noah and Lena; his brother Alan and his wife Patricia; and many nieces and nephews.
A private funeral and burial will be held for family. A memorial service open to Bud’s many loved ones will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Bud’s memory to the United Methodist Church of Woburn, 523 Main St., Woburn, MA 01801.
