Obituary of Sally Haynes Smith
Sally Haynes Smith, of Wilmington and Woburn, MA, beloved wife of the late Conrad F. Smith passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 8, surrounded by her family.
Sally was the first child of the late M. David Haynes and Esther Crockett Haynes. She was born on June 20, 1931 in Bayonne, New Jersey. Ancestors on both sides of her family came to America in the 1630s. Sally grew up in Westfield, NJ and attended Bates College in Maine.
She and Conrad met in Cape Neddick, Maine, and they married in 1950 at Wells Beach, Maine. They celebrated their 67th Anniversary in 2017. The Smith family lived in Woburn on Bow Street for over 70 years.
Sally graduated from Northeastern University in Boston, MA. She worked for the Reading Public Schools and the North Suburban YMCA in Woburn for many years. Sally and her family spent their summers in Cape Neddick, ME and she loved being out on the water.
Sally was an avid reader and loved to spend time working on her rock garden at her home in Woburn. She enjoyed watching Boston sports teams and especially the Red Sox and Patriots. Sally could knit anything – hats, mittens, sweaters, etc. and everyone loved getting one of her knitted masterpieces for Christmas each year.
She and Conrad spent their retirement years between their home in Woburn, Indian Rocks Beach in Florida, and Popham Beach, Maine. Sally especially enjoyed watching sunsets each night.
A special talent of Sally’s was her ability to get every tiny piece of meat out of a boiled lobster. She attended church on a regular basis and was active in church activities. Sally was a member of the D.A.R. (Daughters of the American Revolution).
Sally was the loving mother of Robert Haynes Smith and his partner Harriet Young of Raynham, MA; the late Conrad Nilsen Smith and his wife Carla of Eagan, MN and Pamela Gurrisi and her husband William of Haverhill, MA. She was the grandmother of Erika Shinney and her husband Matt, Robert H. Smith, Jr., Angela Gurrisi, William Gurrisi III and his wife Beth, Carolyn Hart and her husband Matt, Nicholas Gurrisi and his wife Brittany, Tara Saunders and her husband Matt, Brenton Smith, and Christine Smith. She was also the proud great-grandmother to Ella and Colman Shinney, Beckett and Emerson Gurrisi, and Peyton Saunders.
A visitation will be held at the Graham Funeral Home, 3 Arlington Rd., Woburn on Thursday, August 13 from 10:00 am-12:00 Noon. A graveside service will follow at the Woodbrook Cemetery at 12:30 pm. Due to covid-19 restrictions, we kindly ask people to wear a face covering, and maintain social distancing.
