Obituary of Leonard B. Drew

Leonard B. Drew, Jr. of Wakefield, formerly of Woburn, passed away on March 17, 2024. Leonard was the son of Leonard and Mary (Curley) Drew and was born and raised in Woburn with his brothers Richard, Paul, Robert and Joseph. Leonard graduated from Woburn High School, class of 1961. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement. An avid athlete, Leonard played basketball for Woburn High School. Leonard also played semi-pro basketball for the New York Jaguars and was the first basketball coach at the Boys & Girls Club of Woburn. He was known for hitting the longest homerun at Flemming Field in Woburn, 457 feet. He also enjoyed playing golf and scored a “Double Eagle” at the Winchester Country Club at the age of 14. Leonard was devoted to honoring the memory of his brother PFC Joseph Drew and would represent his family at the annual James L. McKeown Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year ceremony where the award was named after him. He paid tribute to his brother every Veteran's Day and Memorial Day by attending the City of Woburn's ceremonies and having the grave decorated by Hillside Florist. A lifelong member of The Woburn/Stoneham Lodge of Elks, Leonard embraced the benevolent spirit of the Elks and was always very generous to those less fortunate. As Leonard's health declined, he was extremely grateful for the friends who would call, visit and run errands for him. Mystic Valley Elder Services were strong advocates for getting him the services he needed and Caroline from Abernathy Home Care was dedicated to giving him the best care possible. His final days were spent in Hospice Care at the Melrose Wakefield Hospital where he passed away at the age of 79. Leonard’s funeral will be held from the Graham Funeral Home 3 Arlington Rd. Woburn on Monday, March 25 at 9:00am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church 280 Main St. Woburn at 10:00am. There are no visiting hours. Burial will follow at Forest Glade Cemetery in Wakefield. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The James L. McKeown Boys & Girls Club of Woburn, 1 Charles Gardner Lane, Woburn, MA 01801
