Obituary of Edward F. Schoenfeld
Edward F. Schoenfeld, of Woburn and formerly of Greenlawn, New York, passed away peacefully at the Sawtelle Family Hospice House on Friday morning, February 16, 2024, at age 95. He was the loving husband of the late Joan (Lomax) Schoenfeld. They had been married for over seventy years when she passed away in August 2023.
Ed was born in Flushing, Queens, New York, and was the son of the late Rudolph H. and Mary (Zullo) Schoenfeld. After graduating from high school a year early, Ed enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served in the Pacific after the end of WWII, repatriating prisoners of war. Afterward, the GI Bill enabled Ed to become the first in his family to attend college, and he earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Adelphi College. He later earned a second degree in mechanical engineering from New York University. Ed’s commute to NYU involved two of his favorite activities: driving and spending time with friends. He also developed and maintained lifelong friendships as a member of Whitestone’s Dwarf Giraffe softball team.
Ed worked at Grumman Aerospace Corporation for 38 years. His responsibilities ranged from mechanical drafting to government military business development to aerospace design to data systems. Ed and his family shared happy memories of Grumman colleagues, friends, bowling, tennis, family picnics, and holiday turkeys.
While Ed and Joan were raising their family, Ed volunteered at St. Hugh of Lincoln parish as a bingo caller. He channeled his curiosity and attention to detail into the many improvement projects that created a beautiful family home. In his spare time, Ed read voraciously and rooted for the Mets.
After Ed’s retirement in 1990, he and Joan traveled and became more involved with their community. Ed developed his interest in photography and explored his family heritage. He volunteered with SeniorNet in Huntington to teach photography and photo editing software. Ed and Joan spent over thirty happy winters in Vero Beach, Florida, and valued the new friendships they formed there. In 2014, they relocated to Massachusetts to be near their daughter and grandsons. They later enjoyed the wonderful community of New Horizons at Choate.
Everyone who knew Ed appreciated his kind ways, impish smile, dry sense of humor, and the twinkle in his eye. Ed had our backs. Always. Semper Fi, Ed.
Ed is survived by two daughters, Janet Schoenfeld Mori and her husband Bruce of Rancho Palos Verdes, California, and Cathy Costa and her husband Peter of Winchester. He is also survived by four grandsons: Timothy Costa, Matthew Costa and his wife Taylor, William Costa, and Michael Costa.
A Funeral Mass for Ed will be celebrated on Thursday, February 22, at 10 AM at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 280 Main St., Woburn. The mass will be followed by burial with Military Honors at the Wildwood Cemetery in Winchester.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Ed’s memory may be made to New Horizons at Choate, 21 Warren Ave., Woburn, MA, 01801. Arrangements by the Graham Funeral Home, Woburn.
