Obituary of Richard L. Johnson

Richard L. Johnson, of North Reading, formerly of Woburn, passed away after a brief illness on Monday, October 30. He was 87 years of age. Born and raised in Woburn, he was the son of the late Eric G., and the late Dorothea D. (Svenson) Johnson. After graduation he entered the Air Force serving 4 years during peacetime post the Korean War. He was honorably discharged and continued his education at Northeastern University earning a degree in Computer Science. Richard worked as a systems programmer for Avco from 1958-1972. He later started his own company, then rejoined Avco to work at the Mt Haleakala Observatory on Maui, HI until his retirement in 1990. Richard was a well-traveled man who had visited 7 continents. Through his memberships of the American Philatelic Society and the US Lighthouse Society his love of stamps and travel brought him a wealth of adventures and memories. Richard will be most remembered for his generosity of spirit and ability to recall and share his vast knowledge with anyone he met. His annual Christmas letter included a panoramic photo with interesting facts. His wish for everyone was to take every opportunity to travel, expand your perspective of the world, its people and your place in it. He wrote “It will make you a better educated and more responsible person in your own endeavors.” Above all Richard cherished his growing extended family. He looked forward to the many happy gatherings be it a large celebration or a quiet game night. Richard was the brother of the late Jean Palm and her husband John Palm of Woburn, MA, brother of the late Donald Johnson of Burlington, MA. He was the loving brother of Sandra Pagano of Falls Church, VA and brother-in-law of Doris (Dolly) Johnson of Burlington, MA. He is also survived by three generations of nieces, nephews, many cousins and dear friends. Visiting hours will be at the Graham Funeral Home, 3 Arlington Rd., Woburn on Sunday, November 5 from 1:00-4:00pm. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Contributions in Richard’s memory may be made to the American Philatelic Society, 100 Match Factory Place, Bellefonte, PA 16823. (www.stamps.org/donate)
