Obituary of Leroy J. Chute

Leroy J. “Roy” Chute, 85, a lifelong resident of Winchester, passed away at his home after a lengthy illness on Tuesday morning, October 31. He was the husband of the late Charlotte (O’Connor) Chute who died in 2001. Born in Arlington and raised in Winchester, he was the son of the late James E., and the late Mary G. (Nickerson) Chute. “Roy” as he was known to family and friends, was a graduate of Winchester High School, Class of 1956, and then went on to attend Bates College. After college, Roy served in the Army Reserves. Roy started his own fuel oil company in Roxbury in the 1960s. Later, he purchased Eames and Carter in Woburn, which became Chute Fuel. For over 50 years Chute Fuel was a successful business in the greater Woburn area. Roy’s good-natured personality made him a favorite of his customers. Roy was a people person. Working out of the same office as his father James Chute, his brother Jim, and his two sons on 31 High Street, Woburn, oil became a family affair. Roy was a longtime member of William Parkman Lodge, AF&AM in Woburn, and he also belonged to the Allepo Temple Shriners in Wilmington. He enjoyed sports and collecting antique cars. He enjoyed the beach at his summer home in Wingaersheek. Over the years he loved to watch his children and grandchildren’s sports and activities; as well as spending time with his family and friends. Roy was proud of his Nova Scotian heritage, and he enjoyed reminiscing about his annual family treks in his youth to Nova Scotia to visit his grandmother’s former home. Roy was the loving husband of the late Charlotte (O’Connor) Chute. He is survived by five children, Cheryl A. Meaney of New Bedford, James L. Chute and his wife Christine of Woburn, Kristen L. Chute of East Boston, Charles F. Chute and his wife Andrea of Woburn, and Elizabeth M. Fishlin of Woburn. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, Paul & Max Meaney, Kyle & Cameron Chute, Connor, Delaney, & Gavin Chute, and Charlotte, Alexander, and Caitlin Fishlin. He is further survived by his sister, Carol Schrock (Jerry) of Hamilton; his brother, James E. Chute of Winchester; and he was predeceased by one sister, the late Dorothy Gilbert of Melrose. Visiting hours will be at the Graham Funeral Home, 3 Arlington Rd., Woburn on Friday, November 3 from 4:00-8:00 pm, with a Masonic Service at 7:00 pm. A funeral service will be held at the Crawford Memorial United Methodist Church, 34 Dix St. (corner of Church St.) Winchester on Saturday, November 4 at 10:00 am, followed by burial at the Wildwood Cemetery in Winchester.
